making our house new

On Saturday morning Zach said, "Hey, let's paint something."  So we did.

Here's the before:

After quite a few painting mishaps in this house we have vowed to cover everything in Kilz before attempting to paint anything.  AND to only use Behr paint from Home Depot.  And now we will add to the list: Only use Behr Paint With Primer.  Still learning over here.

I also went through all of our CDs and did quite a downsizing.  Do we really need a Garbage CD?  No, we don't.  Pet Shop Boys (Zach's, not mine...)? No thank you.  And it was time to get rid of all the duplicate CDs we had when we married:  Hootie And The Blowfish, The Cardigans, Alanis Morrisette, and Sheryl Crow.  Gotta love the 90s.

After a coat of Kilz and two coats of Behr Cottage White in semi-gloss, we now have new bookshelves:

We're SO happy with the difference.  There's still a lot of work to do on the mantle.  We have to figure out what to do about the war zone that's going on around the little windows.  The plaster is super fragile so covering it will be pretty tricky.  And I love the windows and want to keep them, so working around them will be tricky too.  And replacing the windows with new ones that are exactly the same would be super expensive.  Oh well.  We'll figure it out eventually.

What a difference! I love DIY projs. I wonder if it would work to just put some new plaster over the old plaster to kind of toughen it up for a coat of paint. By the way, I really really love that wall hanging you have with the lyrics from I heard the bells on Christmas day. You might be surprised how often I have thought of that since I saw it and wanted one. :)
